I have really been giving the hand crank Little Dutch Maid a workout. I wanted to see if it really could hold up to the rigors of cooking and baking. And with winter cooking season in high gear I finally had time to really get it dirty, so to speak. Could it work as well as an electric machine?
Creaming butter and sugar for cookie dough is always a tough job, but the cookie paddles on the Little Dutch Maid made quick work of it.
The dough hooks easily mixed two loaves of bread.Whipping eggs was a breeze.
And just by putting the crank handle to the 'high speed' shaft, you can whip faster without moving your arm any faster. Its like magic.Yes I would give the Little Dutch Maid an A+. Not only can it complete any task I give it, but it is so nice not to hear the drone of an electric motor. The Little Dutch Maid uses a Bosch mixing platform which is preferred by home cooks far and wide. But do not fret if your a kitchen aid devote. I was reading one of my Amish publications and look what they are making now.
Yep, the Amish have converted a kitchen Aid to run with a hand crank also. So there you have it, two ways to mix to your hearts content. Off Grid style.
I am a KitchenAid fan but then I have never used a Bosch. I would love to have the hand crank style but I just can't put out that kind of money. My KitchenAid was a gift from my father for Christmas several years ago.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the hand crank Kitchen Aid as I love my electric one; if it ever goes out on me, I think I'd just buy the non-electric one.
ReplyDeleteHow does yours hold up to all the cranking? Is the base heavy enough that it doesn't skid around the countertop when you're kneading bread dough?
Jane, thank you for this! Not only for the review of your Little Dutch Maid, but for the info about the KA. That's a better price than I've seen for the LDM though if money were no object, do you think the LDM would be the best choice?
ReplyDeleteSweet! I have a kitchen Aid that I love. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Thanks for the review! A hand crank mixer looks like a must have to the off grid kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI am just tickled for you that your Little Dutch Maid is working out so well. You work so very hard at researching and getting just the right tools. Once again, I have to say you are a wealth of knowledge and an inspiration for us all!
ReplyDeleteMonica, they are a chunk of change up front, but they never break unlike my electric kitchaid which burned up after one year. And the prices are similar to the professional grade of kitchenaid. I guess it is an investment.
ReplyDeleteCR, the base weighs 17 pounds and never moves an inch. It is really well made. And the crank moves so smooth it never moves the base at all. But I can not say the same for the hand crank kitchenaid since I cant see where they would add the weight.
Leigh, it IS the same price as the Little Dutch Maid if you buy it from the factory. I am not sure what the mark up is at the sights your looking at, but they are the same price as an electric machine. I would vote LDM since I am not sure how well the weight would balance on a kitchenaid platform.
Patty, I cant say I have any love for my electric kitchenaid. I do know the older machines are built much better.
Weekend Homesteader, any appliance that works well and uses no electric is a must. As in, I must try it ;)
Mama Pea, I now get 6 Amish publications because I LOVE all the ads for things like this. You are never going to see this stuff in a popular magazine or mainstream newspaper. Oh the things that amuse me :)
I should enter drawing to win that nice piece instead of the electric one-I still hate mixing up cookie dough by hand ,but using this would still be beneficial and after the day I had [read momma peas ] I'm thankful to be alive but I better start using my body in more healthy ways [ and forget about the wealth]thanks for sharing your good knowledge of such useful tools.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, first off, this post freaked me out (not actually the content of your post - but the day/date). I swear when I got up this morning it was Wednesday and I commented on a post about skirts and leg warmer. When I came back on line tonight (still Wed I think) to see the rest of the comments about skirts and leg warmers this popped up. Friday?
ReplyDeleteI am glad your Little Dutch Maid things is working like a charm. Cool cool cool !
Very cool! I admit I don't use my Kitchen Aid much at all, but this is a nice tool to have since you do! (I'm still working on the grain mill LOL, that I definitely will use once I get it!)
ReplyDeleteI like the Little Dutch Maid. I don't have one but I just might get one soon.
ReplyDeleteJudy, I am glad to hear that you are ok. Sounded very scary.
ReplyDeleteEmily, I have no idea what blogger is doing but it is making me angry. I was surprised to see this up too!
Erin, I find I use this way more than I ever used the electric mixer. I always hated that electric mixer.
Theresa, it is a fun little machine. I am sure you would enjoy it.
Thanks Jane. I remember your original post on this, but I don't recall there was a website. Since I'm not able to buy yet, I just looked around. Cottage Craft Works sells the LDM for $469, and Lehman's sells it for $650. You can see why I was hoping to find a better price, LOL. I did a search for the hand crank KA too, but had no luck. Even the Kitchen Aid website doesn't mention it, so I'm guessing it's something Hickory Lane Welding contracted privately with them. Just from the look of the 2 mixers, it seems the LDM would be easier to crank.
ReplyDeleteLeigh, they are all converted by the Amish, so no telephone numbers or websites. Hickory Lane is an Amish business as is Even Heat Manufacturing who makes the LDM and wonderful butane irons. They are very prompt if you write them for info or the product. I have the address for Even Heat on the original post in the comments.I can not believe Lehmans has the nerve to charge over $250 more for the product which is made 15 miles up the road from their store. Eyeopening.
ReplyDeleteHow cool is that! What's the warrenty on somethin' like that?
ReplyDeleteI would like to subscribe to that Amish publication! Would you mind sharing the information, thank you!
ReplyDeleteDaisy, I was told at the factory just to bring it back should anything happen. There is not much to break
ReplyDeleteShaolin, I currently get about 4-5. I have some address in another post. Maybe I will do a more complete list soon.
