Looking out through green colored glass.

Finally, the windows we ordered in November came in. Unfortunately the door is still MIA, but at least something was getting installed. All of this week has been devoted to, out with the old and in with the new.
What I didn't realize at the time I ordered the windows, was that 47 curtain panels would need taken down and washed. By hand. Drats. Who says you need curtains anyway.

Luckily since  the old windows were replacement windows, the old windows popped right out. And since we have a brick only house, the openings were square and the new windows popped right in. Whew.
The reason for getting new windows was that all the seals on the old ones had cracked and released the insulating gas. You could sit 5 feet away from a window and feel a cold draft blow through your hair since the seal around the windows was dry rotted. We hoped that new, more efficient windows would help us retain more heat in the house, and cut down on the amount of wood we need to burn. To give an an example, our old windows were rated R 1.7 when they were new. The lower the number the less efficient. The new windows are rated R 9.0. A huge difference.  I loved this sticker. Made me feel like they were Superman windows. Krypton sounds so futuristic.
All the windows have been installed and now we are working on sealing them from the outside. Already I noticed the upstairs was one degree warmer without any change in the thermostat, without the outside work being done. I was hoping for a little more from the Superman windows, but we will take any degree we can get.

They are also slightly tinted a greenish color to block the suns damaging rays. This will greatly help with keeping the house cooler when the scorching summer sun beams down on the windows.

Grow My Own, I know you wanted to know what type of window they are. Here is the spec sticker. Hope this helps.
We hope to have this part of the job wrapped up by the end of the week. But the curtain washing may continue into 2013. sigh.

  1. Congrats on the new windows! Lots of hard work getting them all sealed, but glad they went in fairly easily.

  2. Oh, yes - tell me about hand washing. Maybe a trip to a local laundromat in town is called for - well, that is a heck of a lot of washing...?

We also have LoE on our farm (double glazed) windows. I can tell you it works a treat. Much, much cooler in summer, and certainly warmer in winter :)

Congrats - so happy for you!

  5. How great! New windows are definitely a priority around here, too. Hopefully your door comes soon, though.

Is it bad that I laughed at the, "Caution, Children Can't Fly" notice on the paper?

  6. Stephanie, it is so rare that a job does go smoothly. I am sure we will make up for it when the front door gets installed.

Dani, you know come to think of it, I dont even think there is a laundromat in my area. Ha, I guess the windows are high in iron ;)

Judy, the picture is no one I know. It is a victorian era painting. I would not have minded to been away from home for the install. Although the windows were only out for a short time and the new one put in, so it really didnt get very cold in the house.

  7. Prairie Cat, HA, you noticed that too. I had a good laugh at that too. I guess the window company has a sense of humor.

  8. What. A. Huge. Job!! But one that will be so worth it once it's all done. I'm betting you're going to notice a huge difference with the new windows in the summer. As for the drapes . . . ugh. Any chance of hanging them outside on the line once they're washed? Draping all that yardage on your folding racks is going to be interesting. ;o}

  11. oh they look great! Glad your old replacements came out smoothly. Ours were originals that came out and what a mess with glass everywhere and dust. I'm with you on the work to prep and then replace. Mine were wood blinds (pretend wood I guess) and I just can't throw those in the washer. Also had to re-drill all to put back up - we have a steel frame house so it was quite the deal. Oh your windows looks so nice. I think you will all be happy with them (Russian IceMan, you and doggies)

  13. The windows are lovely! I sympathize, we replaced ours about 5 years ago they were old single pane metal trimmed ghastly things that the wind whistled through! No drapes here though, I can't do drapes :) Awesome that they went right in with no problems!

  14. Love the "Caution! Children can't fly!" sticker--that plus the mention of krypton made me want to order from that company too--well, if we ever get our own house--one day! :)

  16. Erin, I was very ready to NOT re-hang the drapes but the Husband said no. It was just so much brighter and cleaner without them

Kat, hopefully your new house will have new windows and you dont have to worry about it for a long time :)

    Emily, ha.

  17. When we moved into our house nearly two years ago the first things to do included replacing all the original aluminum windows. Especially the one in the shower... That corroded window didn't make you feel like you were getting any cleaner. It's so much nicer to have new window day! Although buying windows aka the sales people.. gack. You feel so dirty after they leave your home.

  19. Oh yes, congratulations on these! I've noticed what a huge difference our "new" kitchen windows have made just in that room. I know it must be a relief to get these installed. Hopefully the door is soon to follow.
